Community
Involvement

Each month, SIS program participants and mentees accompany youth in the community to engage in a community service project and/or service-learning project with local community-based organizations. These leadership and community service activities are designed to provide opportunities for the youth to address a social problem such as homelessness, access to healthcare and education, poverty, etc. Additionally, our program hosts quarterly group outings where we engage in team building exercises and entertainment activities as well as collaboration opportunities with other youth programs in the Hampton Roads Area.

Peer Mentoring

SIS Sisters in Service Inc. continues to actively seek ways to engage our older high school teens in meaningful opportunities to grow and thrive through purposeful leadership and service. Our newly launched Girls Leading Forward peer led mentoring initiative will empower high school girls to: >be helpful and kind >embrace diversity >develop leadership skills >improve sociability Research done by the National Mentoring Resource Center suggests that peer mentoring benefits both the mentor and the mentee. Positive impacts on the mentee include an increase in connectedness at school, an improvement in relationships with teachers and parents, and a boost in their self-esteem. Developed based on the expressed need of high school parents seeking ways for their child(ren) to develop a sense of self awareness as well as awareness for others, our newly launched Peer Led Mentoring initiative will encourage compassion, diversity, and self-awareness overall. To Learn More About the Girls Leading Forward Peer Mentoring program initiative for High School Girls, contact us at 804-728-0004 or discover upcoming events on the agenda below to register.

After School Programs

We’re excited to officially launch our Girl Takes on the World after-school mentoring program at Cradock Middle School and Waters Middle School this spring! Students at Cradock Middle meet on Mondays and Wednesdays and students at Waters Middle meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with all sessions running from 3:00–5:30 PM. This structured, site-based program is designed to give middle school girls a safe and empowering space after school where they can build confidence, strengthen life skills, and connect with mentors and peers through hands-on activities. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue building supportive spaces for girls across Portsmouth!

More to
Come!

SIS has experienced an unforgettable season of transformation, learning, and growth—and we’re just getting started! As a volunteer- and grant-funded youth outreach and mentoring organization, none of this would be possible without the generosity of our funders and volunteers. A heartfelt thank you to United Way of South Hampton Roads, Hampton Roads Community Foundation, LISC Hampton Roads, Portsmouth Police Department, and our amazing community partners at Portsmouth Parks & Recreation and Portsmouth Public Schools. We also deeply appreciate our dedicated team of volunteers who continue to show up for our girls week after week. We have so many exciting things in store, and we invite you to stay connected by subscribing to our newsletter and registering for one of our upcoming programs through our Program Enrollment Form.
