Community
Involvement

Each month, SIS program participants and mentees accompany youth in the community to engage in a community service project and/or service-learning project with local community-based organizations. These leadership and community service activities are designed to provide opportunities for the youth to address a social problem such as homelessness, access to healthcare and education, poverty, etc. Additionally, Our program hosts quarterly group outings where we engage in team building exercises and entertainment activities as well as collaboration opportunities with other youth programs in the Hampton Roads Area.

Peer Mentoring

SIS Sisters in Service Inc. continues to actively seek ways to engage our older high school teens in meaningful opportunities to grow and thrive through purposeful leadership and service. Our newly launched Peer Led Mentoring initiative will empower high school girls to: >be helpful and kind >embrace diversity >develop leadership skills >improve sociability Research done by the National Mentoring Resource Center suggests that peer mentoring benefits both the mentor and the mentee. Positive impacts on the mentee include an increase in connectedness at school, an improvement in relationships with teachers and parents, and a boost in their self-esteem. Developed based on the expressed need of high school parents seeking ways for their child(ren) to develop a sense of self awareness as well as awareness for others, our newly launched Peer Led Mentoring initiative will encourage compassion, diversity, and self-awareness overall. After School Programs

By design, the SIS Sisters in Service Inc. program is intended to be an afterschool program. SIS Sisters in Service Inc intends to deliver services face to face, and we are currently working towards being a site-based program. *Coming Soon* By design, the Sisters in Service Inc. program is intended to be an afterschool program. We intend to deliver services face to face, and we are currently working towards being a site-based program. For our middle school participants our program reflects the structure of a traditional extracurricular. For our high school participants, our program is facilitated in a student leadership model reflective of a social club/group that meets once a week rather than an after-school program that meets more frequently during the week.

Through use of research-based best practices, our mentorship program engages in a variety of techniques designed to provide guidance and support to youth in need.

We focus on building relationships with mentees while providing tools and resources to directly assist youth. One-on-one mentoring with an adult within the community is provided based on availability.

The goal of the mentorship program is to provide continued support and encouragement to youth who need additional resources to successfully transition, handle, manage and/or address specific goals and situations.
